Rutgers and J&J Connections

J&J, Rutgers Put Local Students on Path to Success

Saturday Scholars Academy
For many years now, J&J has provided financial assistance to the New Brunswick Saturday Scholars Academy, a program run by Rutgers' Office for Diversity and Academic Success in the Sciences (ODASIS). During the academic year, 11th-grade students from New Brunswick High School and the New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School attend Saturday classes that introduce them to experimental science in laboratory and classroom settings and prepare them for eventual careers in science through college attendance.
Bridge to Employment
J&J's Bridge to Employment Program has helped prepare high school students throughout the nation for careers in the health sciences. Kamal Kahn, the acting director of Rutgers' ODASIS, runs the New Brunswick site for the program. The program selected its first group of New Brunswick high school students for the four-year program in October 2008.
Future Scholars Program
A pilot program designed to expose students in the Rutgers Future Scholars program to nontraditional careers will have its first event at J&J's corporate headquarters in New Brunswick on March 30. Several J&J employees will speak about their jobs, how their departments are important to J&J, and how they prepared for their careers. About 25 New Brunswick and Piscataway students will attend the event, which developed from conversations between Clarence Bone of J&J's Office of Corporate Controller; Aramis Gutierrez, director of the Rutgers Future Scholars program; and Eve Sachs, special assistant to the program.

Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick announced the creation of the Rutgers Future Scholars program in the fall of 2007. The program gives students entering eighth grade in Camden, Newark, New Brunswick, and Piscataway an opportunity for academic, social/cultural, and career development support throughout their high school years. The students who successfully complete the precollege initiative and are admitted to Rutgers receive a scholarship covering the cost of their tuition for four years.

J&J Helps University Roll Out Scarlet Carpet for Rutgers Day 2010
More than 2,000 faculty, staff, and students representing 245 academic units, 66 administrative units, and 66 student organizations are involved in producing Rutgers Day, to be held Saturday, April 24. Last year, more than 50,000 attendees had the opportunity to experience their state university firsthand and to better comprehend the distinct and important role Rutgers plays within New Jersey, thanks in part to J&J's sponsorship. When Rutgers rolls out the scarlet carpet for Rutgers Day 2010, J&J will again be a loyal supporter of the free event, which will include hundreds of exhibits and activities for the whole family to enjoy. Join the fun at Rutgers Day on April 24.
